Gas Fireplace Insert — Direct-Vent Sealed Combustion

The upgrade that changes what a fireplace costs you to own. A sealed direct-vent unit takes its combustion air from outside and vents outside, so it stops using the room's heated air and starts producing usable heat instead of pulling it up the chimney. Annual service is required — it's an appliance now, with a valve, a burner and a sealed glass front — but the annual visit replaces the sweeping schedule an open wood fireplace demanded. Different upkeep, lower total.

Wood-Burning Fireplace Insert — EPA-Certified

For households that want to keep burning wood, this is the version that's worth servicing. A certified insert burns hotter and cleaner, which means less creosote, which means the annual sweep is shorter and the fire risk is lower — the maintenance benefit is direct. It has to be installed with a continuous liner all the way to the top; anything less isn't a legitimate install. And the ceiling on all of it is your fuel: burn wet wood and you've bought efficiency you'll never see.

Cast-Stone Fireplace Surround / Mantel Kit (Full)

The face of the fireplace, and effectively a permanent finish once it's in — cast stone doesn't want anything from you beyond dusting. The reason we measure carefully first is clearance: a mantel shelf has a minimum distance above the opening, and it increases the further the shelf projects. We'll tell you before fabrication if the design you want can't be built to those clearances, because the alternative is finding out at installation with a piece of stone that can't be returned.

Vented Gas Log Set — Yellow-Flame (Peterson Real Fyre)

The look of a wood fire with none of the wood. It runs in a working chimney with the damper open, which is the trade — you keep the draft loss of an open flue, and you keep an annual chimney inspection, because it's still a real flue doing real work. In exchange, no logs to buy, no ash, no sweeping schedule. If what you actually want is heat rather than the picture of a fire, we'd point you at a sealed insert instead.

Ventless (Vent-Free) Gas Log Set with ODS Burner

Runs with the flue shut, so nearly all the heat stays in the room — the most efficient thing on this page in pure energy terms. Everything else about it is caveat. The oxygen-depletion sensor is what makes it acceptable, and it's an annual-service item, not a fit-and-forget one. It's restricted or banned in some jurisdictions and not allowed in bedrooms or bathrooms in most. And all the moisture from combustion stays indoors, which some Texas houses handle badly. We confirm local rules before quoting.

Glass Fireplace Doors — Masonry, Custom-Sized

Doors stop an open fireplace acting as a hole in the house when there's no fire in it, and that shows up on the utility bill rather than as a repair. Low upkeep — hinges and gasket on the annual list. The operating rule matters more than the product: open while the fire is actively burning, closed as it dies down. Homeowners who run a fire behind closed doors cook the glass and the frame and replace them years early, and nobody tells them.

Gas Valve & Control Kit (Millivolt / Safety-Pilot)

The part that makes gas controllable and code-correct. We'll be plain: this is licensed work, it's leak-tested on completion, and we won't sell it as a box for someone else to fit. On the plan side it's an annual check of the valve, the pilot and the thermocouple — cheap to verify, expensive to ignore, and the component whose failure mode is the one nobody wants. It's the shortest line on this counter and the least negotiable.

Gas Burner Pan / Pan-Burner Assembly (Stainless)

A stainless pan burner under the media bed, giving an even flame across the width instead of a line of jets. Stainless because this part sits in the wet, corrosive end of a gas appliance and mild steel doesn't last there. Licensed gas work to fit and leak-tested on completion. Annual service is a port check and a look at the pilot assembly — quick, and the thing that keeps a gas fire lighting first time every time.

Electronic Ignition / Spark-to-Pilot Conversion Kit

Stops the pilot burning around the clock, including all summer, which is where the saving comes from. It's real and it's modest — this pays back slowly, not dramatically, and we'd rather you knew that before buying. The trade-off is bigger than the saving for some households: electronic ignition needs power, so the fireplace you counted on in an outage no longer lights in one. After February 2021 a lot of Texas homeowners decide that settles it.

Direct-Vent Termination Cap / Horizontal Vent Kit (Coaxial)

The coaxial cap and horizontal vent parts that take a direct-vent appliance out through a wall. Clearances from windows, doors, soffits and grade are set by the manufacturer and they aren't suggestions — a termination placed for convenience is one that gets flagged later. Once it's right it's low-upkeep: the annual visit confirms the cap is clear and the seal is intact. We supply the kit listed for your specific appliance, not a universal one.

Wall-Mount / Recessed Linear Electric Fireplace

The zero-maintenance option, and that's genuinely the selling point. No flue, no gas, no combustion, no annual inspection, nothing to sweep — you plug it in. It's a decor piece with a small heater, and its output is capped by the circuit, so it warms a room's edges rather than the room. Where it makes sense is a space with no chimney and no gas line, where the honest alternative is having nothing at all.

Self-Feeding Tube Heat-Exchanger Grate

If you're keeping an open wood fireplace, this is the one thing that improves it without changing it. Tubes draw cool air in low, warm it in the fire, and push it back out — a real gain on a fireplace that's otherwise close to a net loss. No servicing beyond the annual sweep. What it won't do is turn an open fireplace into a heater; if that's the goal, an insert is the honest answer and this is a consolation prize.

A working hearth needs tools and the ones supplied with the house have usually failed. We stock forged iron because the failure mode of the cheap sets is boring and universal: plated handles loosen, thin shafts bend, and you buy them again. Cast-Iron Fireplace Grate (Log Holder)

Lifts the wood so air gets underneath, which is the difference between a fire that burns and one that smoulders — and a smouldering fire is what lays down creosote for us to sweep out later. So the grate quietly affects your maintenance too. Buy on bar thickness, not looks: thin grates warp in a season and burn through in two. If you've got an insert, you don't need one at all.

Fire Glass Media / Ember-Bed Kit

Rated glass or refractory embers as the bed on a gas appliance — the cheapest way to modernise the look without touching the appliance. Two things stop it being purely decorative: the media has to be rated (ordinary decorative glass fractures), and it has to be laid so it doesn't smother the burner ports or the pilot. An over-filled bed is the number-one reason we get called to a gas fireplace that won't light reliably, and it's the easiest thing in the world to get wrong.

Gas Log Lighter Bar (Natural Gas / Propane)

A gas bar under the grate to start a wood fire, then shut off. That's the whole job, and using it any other way is how it fails — left running under a burning wood fire the bar warps and the orifices clog, which is most of the replacements we see. Fitted with a proper key valve and leak-tested. Genuinely useful if you burn wood regularly; completely unnecessary if the fireplace mostly sits unused.
