Chimney Top — Caps, Covers & Draft

The top of the chimney is the single most cost-effective place to spend money well — a correct cap and a sound chase cover keep water out, and water is what destroys masonry from the inside. PCS leads with alloy and gauge: stainless and copper because they outlast the chimney, with galvanized offered as the honest budget floor and labeled as such. Copper Chase Cover (Custom-Fabricated)

Think of a chase cover as a roof over the part of your chimney nobody looks at, and price it the way you'd price a roof — per decade, not per invoice. Copper is the version you buy once: no coating to fail, so there's no rust clock running from the day it's installed. On our plan a copper top drops to a visual check each year and essentially nothing else. Fair warning before you commit: it will go from bright penny to dark brown to green, and that change is permanent.

Architectural Multi-Flue Shroud (Decorative)

A shroud is the one item on this counter bought purely for how the house looks, and we'd rather say that than dress it up. Maintenance-wise it's undemanding — it sheds water off the crown and adds a wash-down to the annual visit. Two things to know before spending: it won't improve draft, and a shroud over a crown that's already cracking just hides the crack from the roofline. We check what's underneath first, because covering a problem is the expensive way to delay it.

Integrated Crown-Cap Unit (Drip-Edge Crown + Cap)

A masonry crown is a maintenance item forever — it cracks, you seal it, it cracks again, and eventually you rebuild it. This unit ends that cycle by taking the crown out of the weather entirely: one stainless top capping every flue with an overhang that throws water past the brick. Over a ten-year window it's usually cheaper than the rebuild-and-reseal pattern it replaces. The honest cost is aesthetic — it reads as metal, and on a decorative chimney some homeowners won't accept that.

Powered Draft System (Enervex / Exhausto Inducer + Modulating Control)

This is the most maintenance-heavy item we sell and we won't pretend otherwise. A roof fan with a modulating control is genuinely effective on a flue that can't draft naturally, and it's also a motor, a sensor and a control board living outdoors — it needs annual service and it will eventually need parts. We only reach for it after we've ruled out the fixable causes, because the cheapest draft fix is nearly always the one that doesn't plug in.

Single-Flue Copper Rain Cap

The whole argument for copper on a single flue is that you stop replacing caps. A cheap cap is a five-to-eight-year consumable; copper isn't a consumable at all, and on a plan it becomes a thirty-second look each year. Where we'll talk you out of it: if the chimney isn't visible from the street or the yard, you're paying for a finish nobody sees, and stainless does the identical job for meaningfully less.

Top-Sealing Damper-Cap (Lock-Top / Energy Cap-Damper)

Our favourite upgrade for a house with an open flue, because it pays back every month rather than once. A gasketed lid at the top of the chimney, cable-operated from the firebox, that genuinely seals — so you stop heating and cooling the sky between fires. It also caps the flue, so it replaces the rain cap too. Plan note, and it's a real one: the cable and the gasket are moving parts outdoors, and they want checking every year. That check is included on ours.

Stainless Multi-Flue Cap (Standard Sizes)

One cap covering the entire crown and every flue in it. From a maintenance standpoint that's the point — it shelters the masonry top, which is the surface that fails first and costs the most to put right. Stainless rather than galvanized because galvanized is a countdown, not a material. Where it gets complicated: the cap anchors to the crown, so if the crown is already spalling that work has to happen first, and we'd rather quote both together than surprise you with the second half.

Stainless Steel Chase Cover (Custom-Fabricated)

If your chimney is a framed chase, the builder-grade cover on top is the single most predictable failure on the whole structure — rust, then leaks at the flue collars, then wet framing you can't see. Replacing in stainless resets that clock properly. Timing matters here more than product: a cover replaced when it's rusting is a cover; a cover replaced after it's leaked usually comes with framing repair behind it. That's why it's on our annual look-list.

Wind-Directional / Anti-Downdraft Cap

Worth being straight about this one: it only helps if wind is actually your problem. A rotating vane keeps the outlet on the sheltered side, which solves smoke rollback caused by gusts and solves nothing else. Most rollback we're called out for turns out to be flue size, stack height, or a house too tight to feed the fire. It also has a bearing that turns in weather, so it joins the annual check. We diagnose before we fit it.

Decorative Chimney Pot (Clay / Cast-Stone)

Bought for the roofline, and it does add a little effective height while it's up there. Maintenance is nil once it's properly bedded — and 'properly bedded' is the whole job. A pot that isn't set right restricts the flue underneath it and, in a hailstorm or a spring storm line, becomes a heavy object at height over your roof. We bed it correctly or we won't fit it, which occasionally loses us the sale.

Draft-Increaser Flue Extension (Stainless)

A stainless section that raises the top of the chimney. It fixes one specific, common situation: a flue that no longer clears the roof by the required distance because a re-roof, an addition or a neighbouring structure changed the geometry around it. When that's the cause, it's the fix and nothing else will do. When it isn't, adding height changes nothing — so we measure before quoting. Once fitted it just joins the annual visual check.

Single-Flue Stainless Cap (Mesh)

The baseline. A stainless cap with mesh over an open flue keeps rain off the damper and smoke chamber, keeps animals out, and turns two of the three most common call-outs we get into non-events. We fit stainless and not galvanized purely on lifecycle: galvanized needs replacing, stainless doesn't. For a lot of houses this is genuinely all the chimney top needs, and we'll say so rather than sell you up.

Spark-Arrestor / Animal-Guard Cap

Half of this is code and half of it is the phone call we get every spring about scratching noises. Heavy screen at the required opening size stops embers and stops birds, squirrels, raccoons and bats getting into the flue. The maintenance catch is specific: arrestor mesh catches creosote, so on a wood-burning flue it needs looking at annually or it starts choking draft. A blocked arrestor is a real problem, and an unchecked one is how you get there.

B-Vent / Pellet / Direct-Vent Termination Cap

The cap at the roof for a B-vent, pellet or direct-vent appliance. It has to be the one listed for that vent system — a generic substitute is the kind of shortcut that surfaces during a home inspection years later, when it's inconvenient and expensive. Low maintenance in service; it goes on the annual list mainly to confirm nothing has nested in it over the summer, which on pellet terminations happens more than you'd think.
