Chimney Glossary

Every chimney term we use, explained without jargon. Bookmark this — it's the same vocabulary your insurance adjuster + home inspector will use.

Creosote

The deposit annual sweeping exists to remove — and how fast it builds is mostly down to your firewood.

Residue left when wood smoke cools and condenses on the flue wall. How quickly it accumulates depends far more on fuel moisture and how hot you burn than on anything about the chimney, which is why two identical houses can need very different sweep intervals. Left to harden it stops brushing out, and removal gets considerably more expensive.

NFPA 211

The reference standard behind why your annual visit exists at all.

The consensus document covering chimneys, fireplaces and solid-fuel appliances. For a homeowner its practical value is that it defines what an inspection should cover and when a deeper one is warranted — so it is the thing to point at when comparing what two companies are actually proposing to do.

Inspection Levels

Three scopes at three prices. Knowing which you need stops you buying the wrong one.

Level 1 is the routine annual visual. Level 2 adds concealed areas and a camera scan of the flue, and is what you want when buying a house, after a chimney fire, or when changing appliances. Level 3 involves opening up structure. Most years you need Level 1; the years you need Level 2 are predictable events, not surprises.

Flue

The passage the smoke leaves through — and its size affects how often you'll be sweeping.

The internal channel of the chimney. An oversized flue lets gases cool on the way up, which increases deposit and shortens your sweep interval. A correctly matched flue runs warmer and stays cleaner, which is a running-cost difference you feel every year rather than once.

Liner

A once-in-decades component. Specified right you forget it; specified cheap you buy it twice.

The barrier between combustion products and the building. The specification that decides its service life is the alloy — matched to your fuel — and whether it was insulated. Both are decided at purchase and neither can be changed afterwards without redoing the whole job.

Crown

The masonry top, and the single most common recurring bill on an older chimney.

The sloped cap shedding water off the chimney. Once it cracks, the usual pattern is sealing it every year or two indefinitely — which is a repair being paid for in instalments. An integrated crown-cap unit ends that cycle, and across ten years it normally works out cheaper than the sealing.

Chimney Cap

Buy it on service life, not sticker price. Galvanized is a consumable.

Covers the flue against water, animals and debris. Galvanized caps corrode and get replaced, sometimes seizing onto the tile and making the second job worse than the first. Stainless ends the cycle; copper adds appearance. A cap is one of the few places where the cheap option reliably costs more.

Spalling

Brick faces flaking off — the visible end of a water problem that started years earlier.

Masonry surface breaking away from absorbed water freezing, or from mortar harder than the brick. It cannot be repaired back — those units get replaced. Which is why waterproofing sound masonry and keeping the crown and flashing intact is genuinely preventive spending rather than an upsell.

Tuckpointing

Joint repair. Done to the right spec it lasts decades; done wrong you will do it again.

Raking out failed mortar and replacing it. The two things that decide whether you buy it once are the mortar being softer than the brick and the joints being raked to sound material. Neither is visible at handover, so both have to be agreed before the work starts.

Damper

The plate above the firebox. It controls a fire; it does not seal your house.

Regulates airflow while a fire is burning. What it does not do is stop conditioned air escaping up an idle chimney, because it was never gasketed. If your reason for looking at it is a draught or a heating bill, the component you actually want is a top-sealing damper at the flue outlet.

Smoke Chamber

The space above the damper — and if it is rough, it makes every sweep more expensive.

The transition from firebox to flue. Left as raw stepped brickwork it traps deposit at the coolest point in the system, so it accumulates faster than the flue above and takes longer to clean. Parging it is a one-time repair that quietly reduces what every future visit costs.

CSIA

A certification held by individuals, and checkable in a minute.

Certification from the Chimney Safety Institute of America, awarded to people rather than companies, with a public list. Worth knowing it exists mainly so you can verify a claim rather than take it on trust — and worth knowing it says nothing about what scope of inspection you were sold.

Firebox

Where the fire actually sits. Cracks here are found, not scheduled.

The combustion chamber — firebrick in masonry construction, listed panels in a manufactured unit. Damage is a replace-when-found item rather than a recurring one. In a factory-built fireplace the panels are matched to the model, and when the correct panel is no longer made the unit has reached end of life.

Throat

The narrow point above the firebox — often the reason a fireplace always smoked.

The constriction where the damper sits. Its proportions were set when the fireplace was built, so a throat problem shows up as a fireplace that has never drawn well rather than one that recently changed. That distinction saves you paying for a sweep that will not help.

Hearth

The non-combustible floor at the fireplace, with required dimensions that remodels often reduce.

The floor beneath and in front of the opening, sized to catch embers. It gets shortened or covered during remodels more often than you would expect, and it is the kind of finding that appears on an inspection long after the work that caused it.

Thimble

The sleeve where an appliance connector passes into the chimney.

Maintains required clearance where a stove pipe enters the flue through a wall. Not a maintenance item — it is either correct or it is a defect, and it is checked rather than serviced.

Chase

The framed box around a factory-built chimney. What you cannot see is what costs money.

A wood-framed, clad enclosure housing a metal chimney. Because the structure inside is framing rather than masonry, water getting past the top does damage nobody sees until it is substantial — which is why the cover on top is worth replacing before it fails rather than after.

Chase Cover

The most predictable failure on any framed chimney. Replace it early and it is a cover; replace it late and it is framing repair.

The metal top on a chase. Builder-grade galvanized rusts through on a fairly reliable schedule, then leaks at the flue collars into the framing. Caught early it is a straightforward stainless replacement; caught late the bill includes structure. It is on our annual look-list for exactly that reason.

Cricket

The roof detail that stops water pooling behind your chimney.

A small peaked structure on the uphill side that divides water around the stack. Its absence on a wider chimney means that face collects water and debris permanently, which is a slow, invisible cost. It is roofing work rather than chimney work, and we will say so.

Flashing

The roof-to-chimney junction, and the source of most leaks blamed on the chimney.

A two-part metal assembly. It fails at the overlap, and it is the detail most often disturbed by re-roofing — so a leak that appeared after roof work usually starts here. Sealant along the line buys a season and hides the defect meanwhile, which is why we decline to offer it as the repair.

Spark Arrestor

Required screening — and on a wood-burning flue it is an annual check, not fit-and-forget.

Mesh at the termination that stops embers leaving. The maintenance point specific to it: the mesh catches deposit, so on a wood flue it can gradually choke the airflow it was fitted alongside. An unchecked arrestor is a blockage waiting to happen.

Video Scope

The camera pass that turns an opinion about your liner into a documented fact.

An internal camera examination of the flue. It is the part of a deeper inspection that produces evidence rather than a verbal verdict, and it is worth insisting on before agreeing to any relining quote — it is what tells you whether you actually need the work.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

The alarm for the gas you cannot detect yourself. Batteries are on your list, not ours.

Detects carbon monoxide, which has no colour or smell. Placement is set by code and by where your fuel-burning appliances are. It is genuinely a homeowner maintenance item — test it and change the batteries — and it is the cheapest safety spending in the house.

Draft

The pull that makes the whole thing work. When it fails, there are four candidates.

The pressure difference carrying combustion products up the flue. When it fails the causes are obstruction, wrong proportions, insufficient height, or the house being unable to supply air — and only the first is fixed by a sweep, which is worth knowing before booking one.

Backdraft

Smoke coming back down. Frequently the house, not the chimney.

Flow reversal bringing products into the room. Commonly caused by exhaust fans, a dryer or a range hood putting the house at negative pressure. The free test is to crack a window near the fireplace and light it — if it drafts fine, no chimney work will fix the problem.

Refractory Panel

Firebox panels in a manufactured fireplace — matched to the model, not approximated.

Pre-cast panels forming the walls and floor of a factory-built firebox. Cracks are found on inspection and replaced once; they are not a recurring item. When the correct panel is discontinued, replacing the fireplace is the honest recommendation and we would rather say it than force a fit.

Zero-Clearance Fireplace

A factory-built fireplace approved to sit close to framing — as tested, and only as tested.

A listed unit whose approval permits minimal clearance to combustibles. The permission belongs to the complete tested assembly, which is why substituting non-listed parts into one matters more than it would in masonry construction.

Gas Valve

The gas control. Licensed work every time, and an annual check on a plan.

Opens and closes fuel to the appliance, interlocked with the pilot sensor. Any work on it is licensed and leak-tested. On a maintenance plan it is a quick annual verification — cheap to check, and the component whose failure you least want to discover the hard way.

Thermopile

The part that usually fails on an ageing gas fireplace — and it gives warning if anyone measures it.

Generates the small voltage that holds the gas valve open, using heat from the pilot. Output declines gradually with age, so a millivolt reading at the annual visit predicts the failure months before it strands you. That measurement is most of the practical value of servicing a gas appliance.

Thermocouple

The simpler pilot sensor, same job, same failure signature.

Proves the pilot is lit before allowing gas to the main burner. When it weakens the symptom is unmistakable: the pilot holds while you press the knob and drops the second you release it. A consumable with a finite life rather than a fault.

Parging

Smoothing the smoke chamber — a one-time repair that reduces every future sweep.

A refractory coating filling the steps and voids of rough corbelled brickwork above the damper. Once done, the chamber stops trapping deposit and cleaning gets quicker, so it offsets against years of annual visits. It fixes a rough surface, not a wrongly shaped chamber.

Tile Relining

Restoring clay tiles inside an existing chimney.

One way to bring a deteriorated flue back to a compliant condition. In practice a metal liner or a cast-in-place system is usually specified instead, because they treat the whole length continuously rather than replacing units inside a structure that has already moved.

Fireback

A cast plate that protects the firebox wall — one of the few things here with no upkeep at all.

Stands against the rear of the firebox, radiating heat forward while shielding the masonry that takes the most thermal load. Decades of service and nothing to maintain. The one rule is that it goes in front of sound brick, never over existing damage.

Flue Tile

The clay liner sections in a traditional chimney — and what a chimney fire cracks.

Fired clay units stacked with refractory joints. They handle sustained heat well and sudden thermal shock badly, which is why a chimney fire is an automatic trigger for a camera inspection. Cracked tile is a breach no matter how sound the outside looks.

Ash Dump

The hatch in the firebox floor. Small thing, and it should close properly.

Lets ash be swept into a pit for removal from below. A door that no longer seats is an uncontrolled air path into the flue, which affects draft and lets ash escape where you do not want it — a cheap fix that gets overlooked because nobody looks at it.

Level 1 Inspection

The routine annual visit — what most years look like.

A visual check of the readily accessible parts, verifying the system is sound and clear. This is the right scope in an ordinary year with no changes, and it is what a standard maintenance plan covers.

Level 2 Inspection

The deeper scope — and the years you need it are predictable.

Adds concealed areas and a camera scan of the flue. Warranted when buying or selling, after a chimney fire, after a significant weather or seismic event, and whenever the appliance or fuel changes. Budget for it in those years specifically rather than treating it as an upsell.

Level 3 Inspection

Opening up structure to reach a suspected hazard. Rare, and never routine.

Undertaken only when a lower level indicates a serious concealed problem that cannot be assessed otherwise, and it may involve removing masonry. It is destructive and it is expensive — which is why the earlier levels exist and why skipping them is a false economy.
