This is one of the few repairs that pays for itself in reduced maintenance, which is why it is worth explaining properly. The smoke chamber sits above the damper, out of sight, and in a lot of older fireplaces it was never finished.
01What is up there
Corbelled brickwork — stepped courses narrowing toward the flue — frequently left raw, with open joints and projecting edges. It is the transition every bit of smoke passes through, at the point where it is coolest.
Rough surface, cool gas, slow-moving air. That combination is a deposit trap by design, and it is in the least accessible part of the system.
02The two costs it imposes every year
Sweeping cost, because the chamber accumulates faster than the flue above it and takes longer to clean properly. And draft, because turbulence over the steps costs pull the system may not be able to spare.
The second one is why some fireplaces smoke into the room with a clean flue and correct proportions — the loss is happening above the damper where nobody looked.
03Parging as an ownership decision
Applying a refractory coating that fills the steps and voids and produces a smooth angled transition. One repair, correctly done, with no recurring element.
Afterwards the chamber stops trapping deposit, the annual sweep is quicker, and the draft improvement is permanent. Across a decade of annual visits that is a real offset against the cost of the repair.
04When it is not the answer
If the chamber's geometry is genuinely wrong rather than merely rough — badly proportioned, wrongly angled — a coating over the wrong shape will not fix the draft. That is a rebuild, and it is a bigger job.

Ask whether the smoke chamber was examined and what its surface condition was. If it is raw corbelled brick, parging is a one-time repair that makes every subsequent visit cheaper — and it is the cause most often missed on a fireplace that smokes.
