A Fireplace That Smokes: Four Causes, and Only One Is Fixed by Cleaning
Booking a sweep for a fireplace that has always smoked is the most common wasted spend in this trade. Work the four causes in order and you will not make it.
Smoke coming into the room has four likely causes. Only the first is a cleaning, and a fireplace that has smoked since you moved in almost certainly does not have that one. Checking in order saves you the visit that changes nothing.
01One — obstruction, the only one a sweep fixes
Deposit accumulation, a nest, or debris in the flue. Genuinely common, genuinely fixed by cleaning, and the right first thing to eliminate.
The distinguishing question: did it start recently, or has it always done this? A fireplace that used to draw properly and now does not is a good candidate for obstruction. One that has never drawn properly is not.
02Two — the opening is too big for the flue
A construction proportion, not a fault that developed. Which is exactly why the 'has it always done this' question matters so much — this is the usual answer when it has.
The fix is a smoke guard reducing the effective opening. Inexpensive, reversible, needs nothing from you afterwards. It is also visible, and some homeowners would rather have the smoke — worth seeing one before deciding.
03Three — the stack is not tall enough
The termination has to clear the roof and nearby structures by set distances, and a stack that used to satisfy that can stop after a re-roof, an addition, or a neighbour building up.
The tell is timing: it started after construction happened somewhere nearby. The fix is a flue extension, and it is the right answer only when the measurement says so.
04Four — the house cannot supply air
A fire needs replacement air. A tight house with exhaust fans, a range hood and a dryer running can be at enough negative pressure that the flue becomes an inlet.
The free test: crack a window near the fireplace and light it. If it drafts properly with the window open, the chimney is fine and the house is the problem — and no amount of chimney work will fix it.
Ask yourself whether it has always smoked. If yes, skip straight past cleaning to proportion and height. If it started recently, obstruction is worth ruling out first. And do the open-window test before spending anything — it costs nothing and rules out a whole category.
