The realism question is really a question about which trade-off you want, and each option carries a different ongoing commitment. Knowing the upkeep before you choose is more useful than comparing photographs.
01Why the realistic flame is the sootier one
A tall lazy yellow flame is cooler and burns less completely — that is what makes it luminous and what makes it look like wood. A clean blue flame looks nothing like a wood fire.
So realism and clean combustion pull against each other. A vented set is built for the yellow flame and sends its products up an open chimney, which is why it is the realistic option and why it needs a working flue.
02What vented commits you to
An annual chimney inspection, because that chimney is now a working flue with a sootier-than-average appliance on it. That is the real ongoing cost of the appearance.
It also means the flue has to be sound before you install — a breached liner or failed crown becomes part of the purchase, and finding that out after buying the logs is the wrong order.
03What vent-free commits you to
An annual service of the oxygen-depletion sensor, which is the component the whole safety case rests on. That is not optional and it is not a fit-and-forget device.
Plus the constraints: prohibited in bedrooms and bathrooms in most jurisdictions, restricted outright in some, and all the combustion moisture stays in the room. We confirm local acceptance before quoting.
04The cheap improvements within whichever you choose
Follow the manufacturer's log placement diagram — it is designed around the burner ports, and rearranging logs for looks obstructs them and degrades both flame and reliability. Most disappointing installs are rearranged ones.
Then the ember bed, which contributes a surprising amount of the perceived realism for very little money.
Vented for the look, with a sound flue and an annual inspection. Vent-free for heat with the flue closed, with an annual sensor service and local restrictions checked first. Choose the upkeep you are willing to keep, not just the picture you prefer.
